About Lucy & Leo:
Lucy & Leo was founded on the principles of honesty, transparency, and trust. Growing up in New York and seeing the clothing industry first hand, I witnessed a gap in the clothing industry. At a time where people were more conscious than ever about what they are putting in and on their bodies, it seemed out of line to think of wearing clothes that were chock-full of chemicals and pesticides. I was disheartened by how little the fashion industry thought about the quality of the fabrics they used, as well as all of the waste that industry produced. Frequently I would witness parents feeding their children organic foods, making sure they had organic sunscreen, shampoo, and conditioner, but then placing traditional clothes full of harmful dyes and chemicals onto their kids. It just didn't make sense.
When my little cousin Lucy was born, the thought of her wearing traditional baby clothes, full of harsh chemicals kept me up at night. I realized I wanted to create garments for her that were safe; made from organic materials and produced in the USA. I had bins full of scrap fabrics left over from my time at Drexel University, where I graduated with a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising that seemed perfect for this project. Instead of throwing the scrap away to slowly rot in a landfill, I decided to make clothes for Lucy. To my great delight, Lucy's mom loved my designs and encouraged me to keep creating. Fast forward to Lucy's little brother, Leo, being born. With the addition of him to our family I started to create a line of baby boy clothes and Lucy & Leo was born. If you're wondering about those first scraps of fabrics I had left over from school, we saved them from their landfill fate and started a new project to reduce waste in the fashion industry. Our commitment to giving back and being socially responsible is very important to Lucy & Leo. We partner with local schools in Philadelphia and New York to teach kids, through sewing, about their immediate impact on the environment and their communities. We help them design and make stuffed animals and tote bags out of the scrap fabric that would otherwise end up in our landfills, and then donate the finished product to local shelters to help children in need.
